Here is how my students mark words during our word study block.  We begin by boxing in all glued sounds such as: am, an, all, ing, ink, unk… Next we circle the suffix “s”. We only learn the “s” suffix in first grade. Students understand that there is a base-word and the suffix is attached at the end. They also understand that the suffix “s” sounds like zzzzz sometimes like in “pens”. We practice this for about 3 weeks. We use suffix words in sentences too. We continue to build upon this and never leave it in the dark to move on to something else.
